Gabby Douglas’ Mom Takes on Her Daughter’s Hair Haters: ‘If She Feels Good About Herself, Who Are You To Criticize Her?’

LONDON–Gabby Douglas, our new gymnastics golden girl, is perhaps the greatest star around at this time (yeah, a great deal larger than you, Ryan Lochte).

After helping Team USA handily win gold in the women’s team finals, she continued being the very first Black lady ever to win a gold medal within the women’s individual all-around finals. And she or he’s dirty yet! She's one further individual apparatus final to visit this week, and her encouraging household is still working in london doing right through to the finish.

I swept up with Natalie Hawkins, Gabby’s mother, in the P&G Home working in london (the house is a refuge for sports athletes as well as their families as no family people are permitted within the sports athletes’ village) where she provided the greatest most warm hug ever. Hawkins notoriously let Gabby visit train with coach Liang Chow in Iowa at age 14, where she lives having a host family (see their incredible story here). Here’s what this fierce mama bear needed to say about Gabby’s hair debate (she’s been assaulted on social networking because her hair wasn’t “done” enough), her personal style, and fighting together with her daughter over putting on high heel shoes.

Fashionista: Gabby's a teen, is she into fashion? What are a few of her favorite brands?
Natalie Hawkins: She loves Aeropostale. I believe she's all of their t shirts as well as their jackets. And she's so small Erectile dysfunction. Note: She's 4' 11", we really have needed to shop in the Limited Too for shorts. She wears a young child 12 in bottoms because she's so small.

Does she possess a hard time fitting into clothes?
Her waist is extremely small. Looking for clothes that accommodate her waist lines are difficult and she's broad somewhat up top. We would like [her clothes] to become age appropriate. You won't want to purchase a dress designed for an 8-year-old despite the fact that she could most likely easily fit in it. It's tough to find stuff that a 16-yr-old may wish to put on. We usually get into 5 to 7 stores before we find an outfit.

Do you fight over what she wears?
Really no. She loves to keep her clothes very classy, very stylish. I pick out lots of her clothes-I look for her. Her host mother shops on her also, and i have never selected out an outfit where she's stated, "Oh I do not enjoy it.Inch

That's incredible, really. I would not have let my mother pick out my clothes!
The footwear would be the large factor. She's not really a young girl any longer. She's 16, she would like to put on heels now. Now I only say, "Individuals are extremely high" and she's like, "I'm 16 now." And I only say, "However they are excessive are you able to even walk inside them?Inch and she or he states, "I'm able to balance myself on the four inch beam and do stuff that shouldn't be also possible, in order to navigate some heels." [Erectile dysfunction. note: Fair enough.]

So have you allow her to? Do you know the greatest heels she's worn?
I've. Most likely around three . 5 inches.

OK now some leotard questions. For other competitions where she does not have to put on a group uniform, what is the process for selecting a leotard, and does she ever repeat a contest leotard?
We do not. We attempt to possess a different leotard for each competition. We really design our very own leos. In the Secret Classic and Visa Titles we needed to design three leos and that is very challenging becuse you need to obtain the right color combinations, the best Swarovski very designs, and it is just hard to really make it all work.

Where do you turn together if she doesn't re-put on them?
She just saves all of them. She's a unique little cubby that they keeps all of them in. Now we joke, "We're gonna put individuals things on eBay!"

Many of the women go all-by helping cover their their makeup. Does Gabby do her very own makeup?
Mostly at competitions I actually do it. She's locked away within the sports athletes village here so she has been doing her very own makeup. I realize they'd someone there helping all of them with their makeup, too. She likes a very natural look, she doesn't like anything outrageous.

Why don't we discuss this hair debate now.
